A Born Victim, debut thriller from R P Rochford, follows the misfortunes of Gill Brogan, a young woman who sometimes feels as if she has the word victim stamped across her forehead. Starting with her troubled childhood and abusive marriage, Gill finds herself being bullied, mistreated and finally dismissed from a job she desperately needs.
Just when it seems that life cannot get worse for this 'born victim', someone plants a bomb intending to put an end to Gill Brogan's life but, ironically, what should have been an end actually turns into a new beginning as a sequence of adventures unfolds in which the victim becomes a survivor with even a touch of occasionally quirky romance to add spice to the story.

Meanwhile, ambitious young detective, Lucy Taylor, who has built a reputation working on forgotten murder cases, discovers chilling photographic evidence online which seems to link a number of crimes together. With the help of computer genius, Mike Watson, Lucy Taylor pursues villains who like to keep a record of their crimes then sell access to that material.

The tension builds as cyber-crime emerges from the virtual world to drag several of the key characters in the story into a tense, dramatic final scene in which the victims must fight for their lives with the help of a few good men who have proven that they can still display a sense of decency and honour in their relationships.

Throughout the book, psychological themes are analysed lending a deeper, more serious note to the fast paced thriller as the reader is led to explore the factors which have formed our attitudes toward women and the acceptability of violence against them.

Review: A Born Victim

If you crave heart-pounding, realistic thrillers with believable characters, A Born Victim by RP Rochford, may be just what you’re looking for.

Gill Brogan is an unremarkable 27 year-old divorced mother of two who works hard to pay her bills and care for her children, but she has the unfortunate history of being fired from one job after another. She also has a history of being targeted for bullying and mistreatment by her peers, co-workers and her ex-husband, all of which, understandably, make her timid and insecure.

It seems that nothing in Gill’s life ever turns out well, even though she is sure she is not at fault. Perhaps she has just been born to be a victim of everyone else’s abuse.

Meanwhile, someone has been torturing and murdering young women in Britain and posting the sadistic crimes on the Internet for the viewing pleasure of whoever will pay for the opportunity to watch.

Cyber Crime Investigator, Mike Watson, and Police Investigator, DS Lucy Taylor, are determined to discover who and put an end to the heinous crimes before any more young victims meet the same fate.

But the perpetrators prove to be incredibly illusive incredibly clever at covering their tracks, leaving not even the tiniest piece of traceable evidence as to their identities at either the crime scenes or online. As the investigation wears on it seems more and more that someone has finally found a way to pull off the perfect crimes while rubbing it in the faces of the authorities who seek them. But who? Can Watson and Taylor even realistically hope to track down the perpetrators who have thus far eluded an entire police force? And can they do it before Gill Brogan or any other young woman is tortured and murdered to gratify the perverted appetites of the sick lowlifes who enjoy watching?

A Born Victim is a roller-coaster ride of chills and appalling revelations that will keep you holding your breath and turning pages into the wee hours that you’ll not want to miss…but be warned, it is not for the faint of heart.

A Born Victim is an amazing debut book, well written and incredibly realistic. I expect Richard will go far in the publishing world with such talent. If you love thrillers and haven't read A Born Victim yet...do so!

Totally enjoyed Richard's book "A Born Victim" - I honestly can't believe this is his debut book? Don't know where he's been hiding out...

He describes the scenes so well I felt like I was a fly on the wall...

There's a couple of great lines I loved:

"Because I never thought anyone would listen to me," she filled in the answer before Greg even had a chance to phrase the question. "I never thought anyone would care enough to make it all stop."

So true, and so sad. Read the book, and you'll know what I mean! Can't wait to read more from Richard!

I came across Richard Rochford's debut novel quite by chance and I'm so glad I did!

It started quite slowly, introducing the main character before leaving her behind for a bit whilst the story built up to bring her storming back in.

The book covers bullying at work, cyber violence that spilled into real life, sexual violence, verbal bullying and murder in the most horrible detail ~ I loved it!!

There was also simmering romance running through the book, some ended happily others never took off...

There were twists and turns galore. Just when I thought I knew who the perpetrators were I was cleverly (and I was happy it wasn't who I thought they were!) shown who they really were.

I really liked the way the main characters were all linked together and thought their personalities were well developed and on the whole very likeable. The bad guys were described in a way that made me want to reach through the pages and cause them pain and fear like they did to their innocent victims.

I received this excellent novel from the author himself, Richard Rochford, in exchange for a fair and honest review. Thank You Richard, a well researched debut and I very much look forward to reading your future books.
