The Writer's Life
The floating bookshop was shelved by rain today, which gave me the opportunity to get some chores done. Recycling empties and check cashing put some moola in my pocket, but the most important part of the day was filling the gas tank. A couple of weeks ago I had a huge repair bill, $863. Every time I went to the station the pump would stall repeated
The Disease Called Negativity
Several months ago Hollywood studios released a blockbuster film that is currently up for several awards called Contagion. With heavy hitters like Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow and Laurence Fishburne as the main cast, they attempt to follow a web of infected individuals as a pandemic erupts across the world. This incredibly strong strand of flu virus
Take The Risk, Reap The Reward
We’ve all had moments in life where we are faced with a choice of doing something uncomfortable or remaining the same. In the world of psychology, it’s called ‘Fight or Flight’. It is the initial response a human has to a time of pressure. What I’ve found is it’s not in that moment you make the decision, but the times before which determine your tr
March Madness, Are You On The Bubble?
It’s that time of the year again! A feverish pace comes upon the sports world while all eyes turn towards colligate basketball in hopes of witnessing history. From Nebraska, to Gonzaga, Connecticut and Florida; everyone wants to know if they have their ‘brackets’ in order to track this year’s upset. You even see evidence of March Madness in stores
The Affliction Part 1
In the capital of Indian country, on the murals of Aztec Avenue and down the street at Ford Motors, it was payday. A perfect storm greeted the Navajo, the Hopi, and the Zuni; even as far away as Arizona, the huge Pima had gathered. Pick-up trucks and ever gleeful children rode in the open air. It didn't matter the highway. Route 666, though having ...
No Cancer Diaries....So I Speak Up To Save Lives!
People are often surprised at my candidness when it comes to speaking up about my battle with cancer. In August of 2010 I was diagnosed with a rare form. You know that thyroid gland that exists in your neck? It does wonders for your energy levels and helps regulate your metabolism. Well I had malignant thyroid tissue in one of my ovaries which is a
Avoid Dependence on the “Lady in the Long Blue Gown”
You know the lady. She’s visited your house on some occasions and you were so happy to see her, you wanted to sit her down to turkey dinner, share some of your favorite oatmeal cookies, then listen to her pour out that good old inspiration. The muse, of course! We pray the lady in the long blue gown will barge into our writer’s block and make the b
Selling My Books on the Streets of Brooklyn 3/29
I didn't anticipate much business at the floating bookshop today, as the wind was very brisk. Marie stopped by on her way to Manhattan to return items to Bed, Bath and Beyond. She described herself as an "impulse buyer." I'd never have guessed it. She seems so level-headed. She's been so kind to me, donating darn near 100 CDs and videotapes, most o
Travyon Martin: The suspicious behavior behind HIS untold story
The Killing Case has generated a huge amount of protest for the victim 17 year old Trayvon Martin and his killer 28 year old George Zimmerman.  Martin was on his way back to his father’s girlfriend’s home from a convenience store when he was confronted by Zimmerman.  Zimmerman (a community watch captain) called the Sanford PD to report suspicious activity from a “Black guy” and followed Martin before shooting him. Now it’s been said by Florida prosecutors that Zimmerman has 85 to 95% chance of not being charged at all.  Now that’s suspicious activity!  Back story: Martin was 17 years old, 6'3" and weighed 140 pounds at the time of his death.  Martin lived with his mother and older brother in Miami Gardens Florida.  He had hoped to become an aviation mechanic or engineer after transferring to Krop Senior High his sophomore year.
True Angels
“You see world, you’re no good/No matter how I hate flashbacks and rewinds/Can’t escape the pain that be trapped in my mind/Now you see world, you’re no good.”—J. Cole “See World” They were true innocents—bright futures and long lives ahead of them. Sadly, cut short by the evils of this world. And what makes me sad is that they never had a chance t
