Born in Leavenworth, Kansas, Jessica Deforest was a prolific writer even as a child. At the age of twelve she began to submit essays to a children's page in her local newspaper, often winning prizes such as free movie tickets or a gallon of ice cream. Because her mother was a widow with little formal education, they had a tough time financially. When Jessica won the ice cream, it was the first time they ever had a whole gallon of ice cream in their house.
That's what planted the idea that writing could be more than just fun. It's no wonder she ended up writing and editing for a living. Her first published poem appeared in a national student anthology when she was a high school senior.
A recipient of two Educational Press Association of America Distinguished Achievement awards for editing, she says studying with the late Sloan Wilson influenced her the most. Wilson wrote the bestselling The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit, A Summer Place, and a dozen other novels.
In her spare time, Jessica dabbles in genealogy, painting, basketry, needlework, and music. Jessica lives with her husband and two totally spoiled Siamese cats in Florida.
