In 1719 third mate Bartholomew Roberts is loading slaves on the West African coast when he is captured by pirates. He has at first no intention of joining them until Captain Davis's death catapults him into the office of captain in his stead. As Roberts takes the pirate company to adventure and fabulous treasure in the Caribbean, his love for the beautiful Lucia jeopardises his career.
His daring exploits soon come to the attention of the Admiralty in London who commission Captain Chaloner Ogle to hunt him down. Ogle's obsession with finding Roberts is matched by Roberts' determination to evade justice and continue his ruthless pursuit of fortune. In a cat-and-mouse game up and down the slave and gold coasts of West Africa they become locked in a battle for survival. Can Roberts escape Ogle? Can he be reunited with Lucia?
GENTLEMAN OF FORTUNE is a swashbuckling adventure and is based on the true story of Bartholomew Roberts.
